Job Description

Specific Responsibilities
This role is responsible for the delivery of all associated Design Engineering Tasking’s along with the line management and discipline development for a team of design engineers and associated staff and ranging from graduates through to senior engineers. The Design Team Lead will promote autonomy within their team and manage their own time to achieve high levels of utilisation.
The Haslar office provides support to the design and testing of Marine vessels and propulsion solutions.
Ensure that performance management and succession planning is effectively deployed to ensure sufficient Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel are available to deliver solutions that are safe, fit for purpose and meet the relevant standards.

Knowledge, skills and Personal Qualities Required
Robust understanding of mechanical engineering and design
Ability to challenge poor behaviours and make corrective changes in their team and across other teams
A respected line manager across the relevant engineering community
Experienced in providing advice, assurance and best practice into programmes
Experience of developing and line managing others and building effective teams
Excellent engineering delivery and technical leadership experience
Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills

Challenges
Understanding domain specific challenges and the design requirements for developmental one-off articles in a competitive market
Organising work to meet tight deadlines whilst managing dependencies and project milestone achievement.
Liaison with various stakeholders to achieve the desired output.

Key Accountabilities
Accountable to the Delivery Solution Lead (e.g. Project, Operations or Facility Manager) you will be the main point of contact for customer queries with regards to mechanical design solutions.

An effective communicator and influencer with strong interpersonal skills who acts with integrity and accountability so as to feel at ease interfacing with customers external to the business.

Essential Qualifications
HNC/D level or above in an industrial design or mechanical engineering subject
Experience of running teams & technically leading multi-skilled delivery teams
Comfortable interacting with deep specialists / SME’s as well as business leaders
demonstrable previous mechanical design experience.
Demonstrable ability to work to tight time and budgetary constraints

Desirable Qualifications
Degree in Mechanical engineering
Chartered Engineer status
Basic understanding of FEA / Stress Analysis
Basic understanding of fluid dynamics
Basic understanding of Lean 6 Sigma
