The Structural Designer role is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy's new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

The Role
The difference our new Structural Designer will make
As a Structural Designer you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. assisting in the generation of design guidance information with sufficient detail to enable the safe and effective integration of system and equipment changes to complex warships and submarines
Day to day, you'll gain an understanding of procedures, codes, and standards and how they are applied to technical activities, update knowledge in relevant technical areas and develop skills and capabilities to enable effective delivery of tasks, produce drawings, models, simple calculations, design base documentation and technical reports, assist more senior designers in a range of activities including, produce elements of estimates, production, and test organisations with the compilation of test forms and procedures and undertake day-to-day design activities with guidance and support, in line with all engineering procedures, codes and standards.

Essential Experience
To undertake this role, you need to:
Have undertaken an engineering apprenticeship in a relevant discipline or possess transferable skills from demonstrable experience in a marine/engineering/technical environment.
Possess a general understanding of engineering practices (including an awareness of industry codes and standards) as relevant to discipline.
Obtain or have the ability to obtain SC Clearance
Qualifications
You'll need to hold (or be studying toward) an ONC (or BTEC Level 3) in a relevant engineering subject or to hold a suitable qualification with demonstrable knowledge of platform structural arrangements, design processes and experience in a design environment.
