Job Description

Senior Veterinary Surgeon
Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire
Are you a Veterinary Surgeon looking to take your next step up? Want to take on an exciting role offering a great work/life balance, no-blame culture and the chance to pursue your interests?
If so, this is a brilliant opportunity to develop your career with an organisation that has championed animal welfare since 1897.
About Us
Blue Cross is one of the UK’s leading rehoming organisations for animals. We support sick, injured and homeless pets and care for more than 40,000 animals every year through our rehoming, veterinary and education programmes.
Our hospitals provide exceptional veterinary treatment for animals belonging to people who cannot afford private veterinary fees. We have high-quality facilities, including digital X-Ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, multiparameter anaesthetic monitors and infusion pumps.
The work we carry out is similar to that in private practice. Although we’re a charity, we pride ourselves on the excellent level of care we provide to our patients and their owners.
We’re currently looking for a Senior Veterinary Surgeon to join our friendly team in Grimsby.
The Benefits
- Competitive salary
- Pension scheme
- Employee assistance programme
- Company sick pay
- Life insurance
- Shopping discounts
- A visible and approachable management team to support your success
We foster a supportive and collaborative culture where our employees’ mental wellbeing is a priority. We hold regular reflective rounds to help each other process difficult events. High standards are important to us, but so is the ability to openly discuss where lessons have been learnt, within a safe, non-judgmental environment.
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to broaden your skill set – many of our Vets hold certificates or have specialist expertise and are more than happy to share their knowledge. You’ll also be actively encouraged to pursue your own interests, making this the perfect role in which to realise your professional goals.
We are passionate about helping animals in need and get to see the difference we make to pets and their families on a daily basis. If you think you’d enjoy working with our forward-thinking team, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
As the Senior Veterinary Surgeon, you will line manage and support a team of Veterinary Surgeons.
Our hospitals see a high caseload of emergency and critical care cases, both surgical and medical, so a compassionate approach and the ability to remain calm under pressure are key.
Supporting our Chief Vet, you will:
- Help to recruit and train Veterinary Surgeons
- Assist with the organisation of the Veterinary Surgeons’ rota
- Respond to queries, comments or complaints from owners regarding veterinary treatment
- Support the Training Practice status of the hospital
- Take part in an OOH rota for evening and weekend shifts (time off in lieu will be given)
About You
To join us as the Senior Veterinary Surgeon, you will need:
- To be a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS)
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
- To be positive, approachable and enthusiastic
- The confidence to advise and support other team members as required
Line management experience would be beneficial, as would small animal or mixed practice experience. A full driving licence would also be an advantage.
Other organisations may call this role Lead Veterinary Surgeon, Senior Veterinarian, Qualified Vet, Vet, or Senior Vet.
