The Health Physicist role is based within our Devonport Royal Dockyard business area.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the various classes of nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy's new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

The role

The difference our new Health Physicist will make

As a Health Physicist you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You'll be responsible for advising individuals at all levels in the company regarding the Radioactive Waste Management processes and disposals to meet varying requirements, legislation, and governance to ensure compliance.

Day to day, you'll provide professional advice on Radiation Protection to support managers, employees, contractors, and others working within or around the facilities and associated tasks within the site. These tasks will include the Processing, Storage and Disposal of Radioactive Waste, consignment of radioactive materials, the use of portable and installed radiation, and contamination monitoring equipment as well as the preparation of radiological safety related documentation. You'll also authorise movements of radioactive materials and discharges of radioactive waste, and provide guidance and updates to several stakeholder/working groups.

Essential experience

  • Previous experience in equivalent operational role within a highly regulated field, for example Chemical or Waste Management
  • OR hold a degree in science related discipline
  • OR relevant knowledge and experience of radioactive waste management processes and techniques
  • OR experience (other than Health Physicist) with radioactive waste management or health physics, which will be developed within role.
  • Proficient use in Microsoft office software, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Must be able to gain relevant security clearance up to NNPPI level
