The Portfolio Office Director is accountable for assuring the performance of the Transformation and Change Portfolio of programmes spanning the entire business.
The role holder defines the roadmap, manages the overall workstack, forecasts the resourcing requirements and is responsible for the Portfolio Delivery Framework and all associated processes and governance. This is a business-critical role as it is responsible for shaping and ensuring the business strategy is delivered.
Thames Water is undergoing significant business transformation spanning all areas of the organisation and as such the environment is fluid, challenging yet hugely rewarding. This role focuses on internal change programmes covering customer experience, operating model, organisational design and digital, most of which are at the early stages of initiation. Therefore, the work is very diverse, often ambiguous and requires someone that thrives when given autonomy to define scope and then lead cross functional teams to deliver the plan.
To be successful you will have the following skills and experience:
You will be able to work with the most senior stakeholders in the business and provide expertise to ensure the portfolio delivers the business need as well as ensure critical path and dependencies are managed. Due to the nature of the work you will also be expected to engage with external stakeholders e.g. shareholders, board members, government officials and our regulators.
The accountabilities and responsibilities are very complex, encompassing all areas of Thames Water. Self-motivation, drive and pragmatism are critical as you will need to design and implement the programme / project whilst ensuring current business deliverables are achieved and benefit from the new ways of working as and when they are ready. As such, someone with a consultancy background and/or that skillset would be an ideal fit.
This role is critical and a senior position for the business, with key stakeholders at Executive, ‘C’ level and Board level. You will be able build this capability from scratch and have deep-seated expertise in corporate governance, portfolio, programme and project management, agile devops and business improvement methodologies.
This is the custodian of delivery excellence within Thames Water and is widely recognised across the business. A consulting background is strongly desirable to design, build, implement and improve the function to create a best-in-industry delivery centre of excellence. The portfolio office will need to drive cultural and behavioural change across the whole business.
Your previous experience covering a high number of years would include you leading a Portfolio Office covering complex business and IT enabled transformation, with the ability to build portfolios of programmes and change initiatives to deliver major transformation within Telecoms, finance, banking or energy environment.
You will build and lead the Central Portfolio Office team and be accountable for creating the Portfolio Roadmap in conjunction with the Strategy and Planning team and for the Thames Water Portfolio Delivery Framework and all associated processes and governance (demand management, delivery and financial).
You will be accountable for the overall performance of the portfolio and realisation of benefits as well as the forecasting and planning for all required resources to deliver the portfolio.
You will be reporting on the Portfolio performance and status.
Demonstrating leadership across Thames Water to ensure the behavioural and cultural benefits of all transformation programmes are compelling and embedded, driving a professional services culture across the business and to support the creation of an internal consulting capability.
You will contribute to, influence and take responsibility for the strategic decisions within Thames Water which relate to transformation and change, representing the Transformation and Change unit at all required Programme meetings, ELG and exec Boards.
You will drive and embed change across the organisation, influencing Executive strategy using new thinking and industry insights to deliver industry ‘best in class’ standards & methodologies.
Your success/KPI`s will be measured against a portfolio budget ~£150m+, Portfolio status and performance, Portfolio benefits realisation and Thames wide Change effectiveness employee engagement score.
You will have leadership of direct teams 50 FTE+ / Leadership of virtual teams 100+

- ITIL Master
- Prince 2 Practitioner
- APM Project Professional Qualification (PPQ)
- Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB) and/or Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB)
