Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. As well as supporting exports of frigates the engineering team is actively working on other ship newbuild and life extension programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers.

You will join a national team of over 800 engineers and designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock. We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets. We have base offices in Bristol, Rosyth, or Plymouth, and offer flexible working with office attendance and travel to meet project requirements.

SEG are seeking a Materials Specialist to produce the 'cradle to grave' record of all hazardous materials used onboard AH140 and other ship newbuilds; that will culminate in the compilation and issue of an International Maritime Organisation (IMO) compliant Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM).

Main purpose of the role:

The production and management of a Project Material Management Policy/Plan.
Act as single point of contact for the Customer/Authority with respect to material compliance with applicable legislation, standards, and regulations.
The review of supplier certification and product information to ensure compliance with applicable legislation, standards, and regulations.
The retention of all applicable Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDFs) for all Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) items.
The compilation and recording of all hazardous and restricted materials within a bespoke data base.
The production of a Technical Dossier for concession of use of hazardous materials.
The production of IMO compliant Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) for each variant of AH140 and ship build.
The provision of subject matter advice and support in own specialisation to other members of the Babcock ship build team.

Ideally degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an engineering discipline with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered.
Ideally you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g., IEMA, IMechE, RINA, IET, SARS etc.) and hold Chartered or Incorporated status (or be working towards).

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences:

The Materials Specialist is required to have an extensive engineering background in a relevant discipline and extensive experience of hazardous materials assessment and management that is specifically directed towards ship, system or product safety and environmental impact in the maritime arena.

Key Technical Skills and Experience:

This is not a Health & Safety or SHEF role, it requires extensive, knowledge, skills and experience within the field of hazardous materials assessment and management in the Marine Environment. Also required:
A working knowledge of applicable legislation regarding hazardous and restricted materials
Substantial experience of working in a 'hazardous materials' environment with experience of producing an IMO compliant Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM).
A working knowledge of Joint Services Publication (JSP) 418 - Leaflet 5 - The Management of Hazardous Substances and Restricted Materials in Defence.

Babcock offers a supportive environment including enhanced employment terms and conditions, money purchase pension scheme with life assurance, share ownership scheme, Occupational Health services, flexible working hours (only non-industrials), career opportunities and specialist advice and guidance from our Learning & Development teams. Application Guidance
