Job Description

STEM Returners Programme - Engineering
Bristol or Cumbria
£32,500 - £35,000 per annum (plus benefits inc. around 27% pension contribution)

Have you taken a career break from an engineering role? Are you keen to re-enter the world of work? Join Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) or the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) on a structured STEM Returners programme that will support and upskill you to become a confident systems or safety engineer.
We’re offering support, mentoring and training to develop your skills and empower you to make a big difference to the UK Armed Forces by solving complex problems to ensure they are equipped with resilient, capable, safe to operate equipment that is sustainably procured and supported.
Our Engineering function promotes an inclusive workforce that inspires, attracts and retains people from diverse backgrounds, reflects the society in which we live, and improves social mobility. We know from the COVID-19 experience that personal that factors such as hybrid and flexible working are no barrier for collaboration, teamwork, and success. Through this programme, it’s our goal to make a fulfilling career accessible to all.
About the schemes
We have three schemes available:

* Organisation: SDA
* Specialism: We would love to hear from applicants from a wide range of engineering specialisms. Our technical disciplines include: environmental, electrical and power, mechanical, naval architecture, nuclear, quality assurance, science, sensors, software and cyber, and weapons
* Location: Filton, Bristol OR Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria
* Scheme duration: 12 months (plus opportunity to extend)

Our schemes have been designed to build confidence as you re-enter the world of work, bridging any gaps in technical knowledge, and incorporating training workshops to develop soft skills, all while supporting and preparing you to apply for a permanent role with us. We know people develop at different rates, so we'll also support you to apply for a permanent role with us during the scheme, if you feel comfortable to do so.
About you
To be successful with your application, you'll need to show you meet the following essential criteria:
* Been on a career break for two years or more
* Experience of providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering outcomes.
* Level 4 qualification (e.g. a Higher National Certificate) or above in an engineering discipline
