Design Engineer required on a contract basis to join an industry leading engineering and manufacturing business. The planned start date for this contract is May 25th but this can change based on the Covid-19 measures in place.

As a design engineer you will play a key role in a team of experienced specialist engineers that are responsible for the design of components within the mounting systems commodity group for a truck battery application.
Each project offers the opportunity to work on the design and development of vehicles intended to meet the latest emissions legislation, with world-class levels of quality and reliability. You will be part of a small, friendly team working together to deliver programmes that are critical to the long-term success of a respected, global company.
You will ensure a robust design and compatibility with other sub-systems and components (concept, design, quality, selection of right material and components and design for manufacturing).
Responsible for the specification, design and release of all mechanical elements
The role will require an understanding of physical, informational, electrical & material interactions between components.
Dissect customer & program requirements into component based quantitative targets & robust designs in order to meet functional requirements.
Ensure DFMEA, Engineering Specifications, Standards, Design Rules & Guidelines, Requirements, Statement of Work process/documents are effectively implemented in the design condition at the appropriate design maturity gateways.
Ensure robust timing plans are in place that achieves Program milestones and targets (Quality, Cost, Functionality, Weight, and timing).
Identify key mechanical failure modes & validation workstreams in order to capture these
Lead issue resolution of mechanical systems & ensure all changes are implemented robustly and timely to support program objectives
Drive the resolution of cross functional technical / manufacturing issues using quality tools.
Lead suppliers through design phase, procurement of prototypes, production tooling and ensure components perform to requirements.
Through this role, the successful candidate will have an excellent opportunity to take part in, and have significant responsibility for, the end-to-end design/development process for components and systems. This gives our employees true product ownership and the opportunity to see their products through to volume production.Key experience and skills:
Degree in relevant engineering discipline or equivalent progressive and relevant experience
Creo CAD modelling (solid/surface) & design in context expertise essential
Understanding of fundamental mechanical design (DFM, DFA, static/dynamic loading, structural mechanics)
Expertise in selection of mechanical components, suitable materials & joining technologies to meet system requirements.
Experience following product development cycles & delivery of mechanical designs for key design gateways
Ability to apply fundamental engineering principles from concept through to detail design
Command of Geometric dimensioning & tolerancing leading to robust DFM & location strategies that aligns with Lean Manufacturing principles
Experience of typical BEV and PHEV battery system solutions and technologies beneficial
Strong people skills and the ability to work individually and in a cross functional team
Work experience to project manage a design through to production and manage several parts across multiple vehicle programmes
Working Knowledge of Problem Resolution Techniques (e.g - 8D, Six Sigma)
