The purpose of the role is to carry out engineering activities for defensive and armament systems for company products.
Areas of responsibility may include :
*Anti Surface Warfare, Anti Armour and Air To Air Missile Systems
*Anti Submarine Warfare Torpedo and Depth Charge Systems
*Cannons, Machine Guns and Signal Pistols
*Countermeasures Dispensing Systems
*Stores Management Systems
*Integrated and Stand-Alone Stores Management Systems
*Armament Sighting Systems
*Armament Carriage Equipment
*Arming and Fuzing Units
*Armament Installation Equipment
*Pintle Heads and other Armament Mounting Equipment
*Munition Certification, for the above Armament Systems
*Aircraft Armament Safety
*Firearms Security and Storage, per Firearms Act 1968 (as amended)
*Explosives Security and Storage, per Control Of Explosives Regulations 1991
The primary areas of technical responsibility are:
*Support to the management of the Armament and Explosive Stores and their contents, in accordance with company processes and UK statutory requirements.
*Support to the management of the Armament Safety process for the company, including those parts of the process relating to UK statutory regulations for firearms and explosives such as licenses and police notifications.
*Planning and execution of Armament trials on Ranges in the UK and overseas, taking into account all aspects of armament safety.
*Undertaken loading and unloading of weapon systems.
*Planning and executing test and integration activities to support system development and qualification.
*Capture of requirements for Armament Systems and the scheming of optimal solutions.
*Execution of design analysis and trade-off studies to support the evaluation of alternative solutions and selection of the best, balanced technical product. Use of computer tools, prototyping and analysis techniques, where appropriate, to assess system performance.
*Detailed mechanical and electrical and avionic design and specification of Armament Systems, including the preparation of specifications and statements of work for vendor products.
*Management and oversight of vendor engineering activities that support Armament Systems development including review and approval of vendor designs, test procedures and qualification/certification documentation.
*Production and approval of documentation to support airworthiness clearance and qualification of Armament Systems.
*Armament safety approval of aircraft and armament modifications through the PDS process.
*Support cost proposals for integrated weapon systems.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required
*Degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Aerospace, Avionic, Mechanical, Electronic, Software or Electrical Engineering) or HNC/HND/BTEC and Apprenticeship in similar subjects.
*Recent practical specialist aircraft armourer experience gained in the armed services, totalling at least five years, and preferably backed by relevant qualifications.
*Specific in-depth knowledge and recent experience in the design, development, integration and qualification of Armament Systems.
*Background knowledge and experience in some of the following areas:
*Armament Systems Design and Control;
*Aircraft Armament and Carriage Equipment;
*Mechanical and Structural Design;
*Vibration and Fatigue;
*Aircraft and Armament Trials;
*Firearms and Explosives Legislation
*Specific knowledge and experience of aircraft armament safety regulations and procedures, including legal requirements for the acquisition, storage, handling, transfer and disposal of firearms and explosives.
*Satisfy the requirements of an external peer review by a recognised professional organisation (IET, IExplE, IMechE, RAeS).
Experienced and effective team worker, self-starting and motivating and also relevant qualities for this role.
