The Health and Safety (Construction/CDM) Specialist is based within our Naval Nuclear Clyde business area.

As the Ministry of Defence's commercial partner at HMNB Clyde, Babcock provides specialist engineering support services, including the management of infrastructure and nuclear facilities. We also deliver operational maintenance, upgrades, and repairs to support Royal Navy vessels, including the Vanguard and Astute-Class nuclear submarines.

The role

The difference our new CDM Specialist will make

As a Health and Safety (Construction/CDM) Specialist, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Your role will include providing technical advice and guidance to Senior Project Managers and operational teams when planning, managing, and monitoring occupational safety, health, and wellbeing arrangements during pre-construction and construction of CDM projects.

Day to day, you'll ensure the "principles of prevention", are applied during the pre-construction design phase, whilst working with designers to eliminate hazards and risks at the earliest possible opportunity.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Support operational teams throughout the pre-construction and design phase, reviewing drawings and design risk assessments, hazard logs, risk registers, pre-construction information, all relevant to the complexity of the project.
  • Ensure all pre-condition surveys are completed as required, i.e., asbestos surveys, structural surveys, ground condition assessments, environmental impact assessments, etc.
  • Support the review and processing of health and safety related documentation including subcontractor risk assessments, methods statements, safe systems of work, ensuring compliant delivery of projects.
  • Ensure Projects Department is compliant or at minimum working towards compliance regarding statutory / mandatory legislation.
  • Report and record non-conformance and incidents through the HMNB Clyde reporting system and following up any actions.
  • Provide control to delivery as Nuclear Procedure Coordinator and ensures compliance to the Nuclear Procedure and all Nuclear related processes.
  • Undertake reviews of Project Performance to ensure business needs are being met.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on construction techniques, methods, and best practice to eradicate or reduce risk.
  • Be familiar with health and safety management systems including the development of new procedures/processes and reviewing/updating existing documentation

Essential experience
Robust knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and base standards.
Knowledge of general construction techniques and principles, health and safety by design, safe systems of work, and process safety.
NEBOSH General and/or Construction Certificate or equivalent
NEBOSH Diploma / NVQ Level 6 or equivalent (or working towards)
Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH) (or working towards)
