The CAD Technician role is based within our Networks Rail business area.

The role

The difference our new CAD Technician will make

As a CAD Technician, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You will be implementing the Design Manager's policy for the provision of a comprehensive, professional and cost-effective drawing service on a wide variety of civil engineering projects to ensure successful delivery to clients.

Day to day, you will be part of a larger team responsible for delivering rail design projects nationally to include NI, Scotland, England and Wales.

This role will be based in the office in Birmingham whilst training. Once training is complete, the role will be working from home with the occasional meeting in the office.


Extensive practical CAD experience of detailing reinforced concrete and structural steelwork related to general civil engineering works or building structures.
Computer literate particularly in the use of CAD facilities. Must be capable of efficiently operating the current version of AutoCAD as used by Babcock desirable to be capable of operating MicroStation CONNECT Edition
Should have a sound working knowledge of current British & European Standards appropriate to drawing practices. Should also have an appreciation of other current British Standards, Codes of Practice, Railway Group and Line Standards and other statutory documents.

Minimum O.N.C. in Civil Engineering or equivalent qualification. H.N.C. desirable but not essential.
Capable in the use of survey equipment and should have an understanding of up-to-date survey techniques and be prepared to learn these.
