Advocate Parent / Carer
We are looking for caring and committed individual to act as an advocate to support parents and carers who live in Hammersmith and Fulham and are responsible for children and young people under the age of 25 with learning disabilities.
This is role working with a leading local Learning Disability and Autism charity delivering a range of projects within Hammersmith and Fulham (and beyond).
Job Title: Parent/Carer Advocate (Children & Families)
Salary: £26,000 pro rata
Hours: Part time, 21 hours per week - The postholder may need to occasionally work out of office hours, evening or weekends as is necessary.
Location: Hammersmith - homeworking during COVID-19.
Closing date: 20th February 2021 by 9 am
About the role:
The Advocates will work in partnership with the parent/carer and will not offer any advice or take any action without their consent. They will not make judgements, offer their own opinions, or make decisions on behalf of parents.
In addition to providing 1:1 advocacy support, the advocate will also support parents/carers at Annual Reviews, CIN, EHCP and care planning meetings, solicitor appointments and at child protection conferences and core group meetings.
The Advocate will also signpost parents to other appropriate sources of support and information if needed.
About you:
The successful candidate will be an excellent team player with a strong understanding of the issues confronting children and young people with learning disabilities and autism, their parents, and carers today.
He/she will need to be a good listener, compassionate and understanding of the issues of parenting a disabled child. The candidate will need to have the maturity and ability to liaise with and build relationships with professionals at all levels of the borough community, and at the same time have the confidence to challenge when necessary.
The following key skills and experience are required:
• Level 2 independent advocacy or equivalent qualification with relevant experience in providing advocacy.
• Willingness to take on the Level 2 qualification in independent advocacy within the probation period to meet statutory requirements if required.
A knowledge of the local area would also be an added advantage.
